Introduction
Born on February 7, 1995, Matthew Mooney is an American professional basketball player currently playing for Unicaja of the Liga ACB. In his earlier days, he played for the college basketball team, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and South Dakota after being transferred during his freshman year at the United States Air Force.
Early Life and High School Career
Matthew Mooney had a younger brother, Joe Mooney, who, like him, was also a basketball player. He attended Notre Dame College Prep and commuted for more than two hours to reach Wauconda, Illinois, to play under coach Tom Les. Mooney was lightly recruited and had 2 college offers when he came out of high school, eventually signing with the United States Air Force.
College Career
As a freshman at the United States Air Force, Mooney averaged 6.9 points per game. However, after struggling with the strict military rules and experiencing bullying, he transferred after just 1 season.
After sitting out one season, Mooney averaged 16.9 points per game as a sophomore for South Dakota, leading the team to a regular-season championship. He was named to the first-team All-Summit League and was the newcomer of the year. As a junior, he averaged 18.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. He was again named to the first-team All-Summit League. He also scored 31 points in a loss against TCU and 30 points in the Summit League Championship. Mooney later transferred as a graduate student, selecting Texas Tech over offers from Northwestern and Creighton.
